Impact and Community Engagement

I’m enthusiastic about promoting German literature to the Yorkshire community and beyond. Currently, I am working on a Holocaust Memorial Day project, to engage the University with the city’s commemorative events. I’m always delighted to speak about my research, and German culture more generally, to wider audiences.

  • January 2014: collaborating on a Holocaust Memorial Day theatre project, based on testimony held in the University’s Liddle collection, with The Theatre Company Blah Blah Blah and Leeds City Council.
  • September 2013: participating in workshops with museum professionals at the Cape Town Holocaust Centre; speaking on ‘Literature and Forgiveness’ at Lilliesleaf Museum as the guest of the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre.
  • 14 June 2013: participating in PERFORMANCE and VIOLENCE sandpit event with Opera North
  • 24 January 2013: Introducing The Counterfeiters as part of the Leeds Holocaust Memorial Day events programe.
  • 24 October 2012: Holding talk on ‘Mephisto: Faust on Film’ at the Scarborough Anglo-German Society
  • 20 September 2012: Introducing the film Mephisto as part of the Opera North Faust season.
  • 14-15 March 2012: Organised visit of German writer Clemens Meyer to Leeds
  • Co-organiser (with Dr. Richard Hibbitt and Dr. Matthew Treherne) of the HEIF-funded ‘International Writers at Leeds’ series, co-hosted by Leeds Central Libraries
  • 13 October 2011: Organised visit of Austrian writer Alois Hotschnig and Tess Lewis to Leeds
  • 21 September 2011 and 27 October 2010: Held talks on ‘W. G. Sebald: Memory, History, Identity’ at the York Anglo-German Society and at the Scarborough Anglo-German Society
  • 2 July 2011: Organised sandpit event on ‘The Resurgence and Rediscovery of German Literature in Translation’, exploring ways to link publishers, readers and teachers of German literature in translation locally around Leeds
  • 28 March 2011: Hosted visit of German writer Larissa Boehning to the University of Leeds, including a translation workshop with MAATS and undergraduate students and a reading from Boehning’s work
  • February 2009: Held introductory talk to the film The Death Mills as part of the public screening series ‘Injustice on Film’ at the University of Liverpool
